General Rules of Interpretation (GRI)

General Rules of Interpretation (GRI) — the six rules by which a product is assigned to a specific commodity code. They set the priority of heading texts and the order for dealing with sets, parts and disputed cases.

The GRI are applied sequentially until an unambiguous heading is found. Correct application of the rules is the basis for defending the code in a dispute with customs.
